Solar Tube Skylights

Solar Tube Skylights

There’s no substitute for natural light. In comparison with the artificial variety, it’s better for your health, the environment, and your electric bill. So figuring out how to get more daylight into your home is a worthwhile endeavor, to say the least. For rooms with an exterior wall, the solution is simple—add a window. For interior spaces where windows aren’t an option, tubular skylights are a smart alternative.

How Do Solar Tube Skylights Work?

A solar tube, commonly referred to as a sun tunnel, is a skylight alternative for channeling sunlight to a building’s interior. With this technology, sunlight enters a metallic tube through a clear covering protruding from your roof. The natural light is then channeled along the length of the tube and into your building by a highly reflective polished sheet metal material that acts as a continuous mirror.

Most solar tubes don’t actually produce any solar electricity, but some newer products have integrated photovoltaic technologies to provide artificial lighting when the sun isn’t shining. Solar tubes are generally not a replacement for electric lighting; rather, they are best used as an alternative to a natural skylight. While you won’t get a view of the sky like you would with a skylight, they are usually a lower cost product that can be easy-to-install and reliable alternative to skylights.

Why Solar Tubes?

The Benefits Of Solar Tube Skylights

Economic Benefits

One obvious cost-saving benefit of installing a tubular skylight is that daylight is free. Once the device is installed, your dependence on electricity is reduced, and so is your utility bill. Tubular daylighting devices, are also more affordable and less costly to install than traditional skylights. In most cases, they can be installed in a matter of hours, requiring no construction, drywall, or repainting. Solar Tube Skylights are designed with a  light-capturing dome that redirects low-angle sunlight and rejects overpowering midday summer sun. They also minimize heat gain and loss for added savings on heating and cooling.

Environmental Benefits

Skylights harness one of our most coveted natural and sustainable resources—light from the sun. So putting them to work at home not only lessens reliance on electricity, but also reduces energy consumption from power plants. When we consume less, we conserve more natural resources and help limit greenhouse-damaging gas emissions—a win for us and the planet. For added earth-friendly benefits, Solatube’s manufacturing plant recycles its excess production materials, making their products both clean and green.

Emotional Benefits

It’s no secret that natural light, or the lack thereof, affects us on a physiological level. Consider the existence of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a state of depression that can occur when one doesn’t get enough exposure to the sun. Sunlight plays an important role as a mood elevator by triggering the production of serotonin. It is also a key contributor of heart-protecting vitamin D. And it helps regulate circadian rhythms, which contributes to healthier sleep cycles. Sunlight also heightens energy levels and concentration, making you more productive and naturally alert. In short, daylight is a staple of our existence that we rely on for emotional balance.

When we purchased our home two years ago, the roof had not been maintained which eventually resulted in a couple leaks as well as significant amount of moss on the concrete tiles. We knew a flat addon and all the valleys at the very least had to be either replaced, or the very least have major maintenance completed. After going through many bids we fortunately found Alex whom was very professional, respectful and fair on pricing. He worked with us to ensure we knew everything that would be done, how it would be done and with what materials. When they found additional damage we had been unaware of, he gave us options and made us feel confident our roof was in good shape by the time his team completed. Fast forward 6 months, we’ve just had our first bit of rain and everything is holding up well. We had one concern that Alex came out to check out personally and made sure all was well.

I am very pleased with the new roof Alex and his crew installed last week on my house in South Land Park Hills. I received five quotes (more but only five showed up) and I chose Alex Perez Roofing because he was reliable, had great references, is a family business, has been roofing for many years, and his quote was very reasonable.

Alex consistently followed up with me and when they began the work he provided excellent customer service, timely responses to phone calls/texts, and installed my new roof in 4-days which included gutter guards and repairing some holes where I had the wind turbines removed. He installed the ridge vent as I requested and the roof passed the permit process. He even sent me pics of the new roof since I live in San Diego.

From the first time I spoke with Alex, he was professional, real, good guy, and modest. I had a very large tree fall in a storm and land on my roof. It did quite a bit of damage to the roof and our patio cover. He gave me an estimate and when i scheduled the roof repair, he told me it would take 4 days. Alex even took time out of his personal time in the evenings to answer questions and talk. The removal crew showed up first thing in the morning and had the roof and broken parts torn away and then his crew went to work with the repairs and install. His guys were quick, professional, funny and nice. I went to see how they were doing and was stunned at their progress. They completely finished and did an AMAZING job, in less than 2 days. I honestly couldn’t believe that they finished when Alex told me. The roof looks absolutely incredible!!! His guys added extra ventilation across the ridge of the roof that helps our whole house fan work better. More…

Let me start off by saying the I bought a fixer upper, so I have had A LOT of experience with companies coming to my home to to work for various projects over this past year. Alex Perez’s Roofing is by far the best experience I have had. Hands down. I had Alex and his crew put seamless aluminum gutters on my home and I couldn’t be happier with the process.

Alex is right mix of professional and friendly. He was very knowledgeable of gutters and very accommodating of my request to make the whole process contactless due to COVID. These were both very important to me.
